New HP Business Desktops

New HP Business Desktops

June 13, 2013 0 By Eric Shanks

Only a few years removed from when HP announced they were ditching the workstation part of their product line, they’ve announced a new set of desktops this week.

The EliteOne 800 G1

The EliteOne 800 G1 is an all in one solution for companies that include the newer Intel 8 Series Q85 chipset which includes the Intel vPro technology.  I haven’t been able to get my hands on playing with this yet, but essentially it uses the trusted execution environment in order to allow access to the PC even if it’s powered off, or if it has a virus.  Perhaps this doesn’t seem like a big deal to end users, but the IT group that has to support these devices will certainly take notice.  I liken it to having an iLO processor on every desktop so that troubleshooting can be done remotely by support.  This will even allow off site or third party support to gain access in order to troubleshoot issues.

It’s difficult to roll out big hard drives with the performance users want.  I know I’d never be able to replace my desktops that have SSDs in them without users screaming at me that it takes too long to boot.  The new HP Desktops have a hybrid drive of up to 1TB which uses a smaller SSD drive for caching in a single drive enclosure.

As one might expect, these devices optionally come as a touch screen loaded with Windows 8.

The EliteDesk 800 G1

The EliteDesk 800 G1 also has the Intel vPro technology (just get used to saying that.  I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a standard option on all desktops soon) as well as having Intel Wireless Display (WIDI).  This technology will allow you to connect your desktop to a projector or monitor without the use of those pesky cables.  This might not be the greatest achievement ever for the IT admins, but it will certainly make the brass at your company happy when they walk into the conference room and wirelessly project their presentations.  A little bit of the “WOW” factor here, I suppose.

You have the options for SSD drives or not on these machines and they’ll hold 32GB of RAM and some pretty high end graphics cards for a business desktop. NO GAMING AT WORK!!!!

The ProOne 600 G1 and the ProDesk 600 G1

The final two desktops seem to be the “Security Focused” desktops.  They offer self encrypting hard drives as well as some additional software that permanently wipes data instead of the traditional delete operations.  The ProDesk 600 G1 is the higher end model while the ProDesk is a slightly cheaper version.

Look for more information about these devices this week as HP Discover is going on in Las Vegas, NV.

Full Disclosure:  HP sponsored a trip for me to come to Discover this year to cover the event but did not pay for any blog articles or have any say in the editorial process.  The thoughts on this site are my own.
